  • Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2022 has been released at £1,367 per 12×75.
  • Neal Martin scored the wine 95-97 points, predicting it will ‘be a wonderful, delicious Smith Haut Lafitte’.
  • Buyers looking for value might want to consider the 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019 vintages.

As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château Smith Haut Lafitte has been released at €114 per bottle ex-négociant, up 25% on the 2021 release (€91.20).

It is being offered by the international trade for £1,367 per 12×75, up 25.4% on the 2021s opening price (£1,090 per 12×75).

At this price, the 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019 vintages look better value in relation to today’s release (as appropriate). See more pricing analysis below.

Critics’ scores

Neal Martin (Vinous) gave the wine a barrel range of 95-97 points, calling it ‘fragrant’ and ‘pure on the nose’. He further predicts the wine is ‘going to grow to be a wonderful, delicious Smith Haut Lafitte’.

Jane Anson awarded the wine a score of 97 points, noting it has ‘plenty of energy from the first kick’.

James Suckling gave the wine a barrel range of 97-98 points and called it ‘spicy and interesting’.

Fair Value analysis

Smith Haut Lafitte prices are not significantly correlated to Neal Martin scores, the chosen critic for Liv-ex’s Fair Value’ methodology. At £1,367 per 12×75, the release is one of the most expensive Smith Hait Lafitte on the market.

Buyers looking for value will want to consider the 2019 vintage. With 96 points from Neal Martin, it is currently available at a 34.2% discount to today’s release.

The 2016, which was scored 95+ by Neal Martin, is also available at a discount of 27% to the 2022. The 2015 and the 2018 vintages, with a score of 95 points, also look attractive.

The lower-scoring (and cheaper) 2017 and 2014 may be a good entry point into a highly sought-after label.

Other releases

Château Smith Haut Lafitte’s second wine, Le Petit Smith Haut Lafitte, was also released at €21.60 per bottle ex-négociant.
