Critical response

William Kelley (The Wine Advocate) stated that ‘the finest of the first growths this year appears to be the 2023 Lafite Rothschild’. Declaring it ‘a terrific effort’, Kelley awarded the wine 97-99 points.

Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux) scored this ‘gorgeous Lafite’ a potentially perfect score of 98-100 points. The critic highlighted that the 2023 does ‘not [have] the concentration of 2022, but in many ways [showcases] the essence of Lafite more squarely’.

Neal Martin (Vinous) gave a barrel score of 95-97 points, a slightly more conservative range than Antonio Galloni (Vinous), who awarded 95-98 points.

The wine earned a place among Jean-Marc Quarin’s small set of ‘exceptional’ wines this vintage. At 97 points, however, the 2023 falls three points short of the perfect 100 he awarded to the 2022
