Liv-ex celebrates ten years of trading

By July 19, 2010Liv-ex updates

It was exactly ten years ago today that we matched our first trade on Liv-ex - five cases of Gruaud Larose 1982 at £920. In those days we only had 12 members. Ten years on and the Liv-ex membership has expanded to encompass 308 fine wine companies in 26 countries, with more than half based outside the UK. As the chart below shows, the momentum continues to build.

Gruaud Larose 1982 is now trading at £2,500 per case, an increase of 171% in the ten years since Liv-ex launched. Of course, many other wines have shown even greater returns over this period, with Lafite 1982 leading the field at 1,183% (£3,000 per case to £38,500).

Overall, prices for the Bordeaux First Growths, as measured by the Liv-ex Fine Wine 50 Index, have increased 276% over the past ten years. This is a far better performance than that delivered by the major share indices and significantly higher than shown by gold. Below is a table comparing their performance (30 June 2000 to 30 June 2010, performance excludes income and costs).
