As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Le Clarence de Haut-Brion 2022 has been released at €132 per bottle ex-négociant, up 20% on the 2021 release (€110 per bottle).

It is being offered by the international trade for £1,584 per 12×75, a 21.1% increase on the 2021’s opening price (£1,308 a case).

The volume released was 55% down year-on-year, which may go some way in explaining the price hike.

At this price, the 2016 and 2018 vintages look better value in relation to today’s release. See more pricing analysis below.

Critics’ scores

Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine a barrel range of 91-93 points.

James Suckling awarded this year’s Clarence Haut-Brion a score of 94-95 points, highlighting its ‘crushed stone’ finish and overall subtlety.

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) scored it 92-94, calling this vintage ‘fabulous’ with ‘gorgeous savory nuance’.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Wine Independent) awarded it a barrel range of 91-93 points, recommending that the wine needs ‘a little coaxing’ on the nose but boasts ‘impressive freshness’ on the finish.

Fair Value analysis

Clarence Haut-Brion Market Prices are 57.5% correlated to Neal Martin scores – the chosen critic according to the Liv-ex ‘Fair Value’ methodology. At £1,584 per 12×75, the new release is coming above the fair value line.

Buyers might consider the 2016 and 2018 vintages, which are available for a discount to today’s release and have several years in bottle already. Of the seven most recent vintages, they have the highest Neal Martin scores (92 points) aside from the 2022.

The lower-scoring 2012, 2014 and 2019 might also be of interest.
