  • Château Haut-Brion 2022 has been released at £6,180 per 12×75.
  • ‘Quintessential Haut-Brion’, said Neal Martin, who rated it 96-98 points.
  • Buyers looking for value might want to consider the 2019 and 2020 vintages.

As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign,  Château Haut-Brion 2022 has been released at €516 per bottle ex-négociant, up 22.9% on the 2021 release (€420 per bottle).

It is being offered by the international trade for £6,180 per 12×75, a 21.2% increase on the 2021’s opening price (£5,100 a case).

At this price, the 2019 and 2020 vintages look better value in relation to today’s release. See more pricing analysis below.

Critics’ scores

Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded it a barrel range of 96-98 points, praising its medium-bodied palate that is ‘blessed with unerring symmetry’. He noted the 2022 Haut-Brion’s ‘bewitching’ texture and a finish that is ‘almost pixelated’. In his words: ‘magnificent, but not necessarily the best wine that Delmas oversaw in this vintage’.

‘A classic, breath-taking expression of Haut-Brion’, noted Lisa Perrotti-Brown (Wine Independent) who rated it at 97-99+ points. After the first ten years in the bottle, she expects to ‘watch it soar’.

James Suckling scored the wine at 98-99 points, underscoring the ‘fascinating aromas’ of currants and cedar with sandalwood and peaches. He highlights the ‘interesting’ merlot majority in this year’s blend (53.6%), an anomaly for Haut-Brion.

Fair Value analysis

Haut-Brion Market Prices are 53.9% correlated to Neal Martin scores – the chosen critic for Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology. At £6,180 per 12×75, the new release comes above the fair value line.

As such, based on the chart below, buyers looking value may want to consider the 2019 vintage. The wine received a score of 99+ points from Neal Martin (Vinous) and is available at a discount of 23.8% to today’s release.

The 2020 also sits below the fair value line. With 96 points from Neal Martin, it is available at a 31.2% discount to the 2022. The lower-scoring 2017 and 2012 also look attractive.
