Château Brane-Cantenac 2022 released En Primeur

  • Château Brane-Cantenac 2022 has been released at £720 per 12×75.
  • ‘A wine you are going to treasure’, said Neal Martin who rated it 96-98 points.
  • Buyers looking for value might want to consider the 2016, 2019 and 2020 vintages.

As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château Brane-Cantenac 2022 has been released at €60 per bottle ex-négociant, up 27.7% on 2021’s opening price (€47 per bottle).

It is being offered by the international trade at £720 per 12×75, up 27.7% on the 2021’s opening price.

The 2022 comes at a premium to others available on the market, but it is worth noting it is the highest-scoring Brane-Cantenac in the last 10 years according to Neal Martin. The volume coming to market is 40% down on the previous year, which may go some way in explaining the increase in release price.

Buyers looking for value may also want to consider the 2016, 2019 and 2020 vintages. See more pricing analysis below.

Liv-ex members ranked Brane-Cantenac number one for value in this year’s En Primeur Survey. It tops the list of 110 different wines mentioned in answer to this question.

Critics’ scores

Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine a barrel range of 96-98 points, deeming the 2022 Brane-Cantenac ‘blessed with haunting poise’. He points out the ‘hidden depth’ that has come to be a signature of the estate, predicting that ‘it is a wine that 15 to 20 years down the road, you are going to treasure’.

William Kelley (Wine Advocate) scored it 95-97 points and noted that ‘this is a terrific 2022 that may rival or even surpass the 2019 if it realises all its potential in bottle’.

James Suckling gave a barrel range of 96-97 points to this ‘long and very linear red for Margaux, with intense freshness and energy’.

Jean-Marc Quarin rated this ‘wonderful’ wine 99 points, his highest score given to Brane-Cantenac En Primeur.

Fair Value Analysis

Brane-Cantenac Market Prices are 87.4% correlated to Neal Martin scores, the chosen critic for Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology. The chart below shows where the new release sits compared to its peers, and where potential buying opportunities lie.

Buyers looking for value might consider the 2016 and 2020 vintages – both received 96 points from Neal Martin (similar to the 2022) but are available at an 18.1% and 19.9% discount to today’s release respectively. The 2019, which was scored 95 points, also sits just under the Fair Value line and is available at a 20.0% discount to today’s release.

The lower-scoring 2014 and 2017 vintages also present a good entry point into a sought-after label.

Other releases

Brane-Cantenac’s second label, Baron de Brane 2022, has also been released at €18 per bottle ex-négociant. The volume coming to market is also down 40% year-on-year, and the label for this vintage is new.
