Critical response

According to Jane Anson the 2023 Conseillante is ‘easily among the most successful wines of Pomerol in the vintage’. She awarded a score of 97 points.

Neal Martin (Vinous), awarding a barrel score of 96-98 points, described the wine as ‘very harmonious and poised, with a sophisticated, mineral-driven finish’.

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) gave the wine a score range of 95-97 points. He adds that ‘more than anything else, the 2023 impresses with its balance and total class’.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) described ‘playful scents of Morello cherries, wild blueberries, and juicy plums leading to fragrant suggestions of violets, dark chocolate, rosebud tea, and star anise’, awarding 97-99 points.

‘One of the great wines of the vintage, and one that can rival its 2022 counterpart’, said William Kelley (The Wine Advocate), awarding the wine his top score – a potentially perfect 98-100 points.

Pricing analysis

According to the Liv-ex Fair Value methodology, Market Prices of Château La Conseillante are 74.3% correlated with scores from Neal Martin, Liv-ex members’ most influential critic of Bordeaux En Primeur wines.

As shown in the chart below, today’s release falls below the Fair Value regression line. Buyers looking for value opportunities have options in back vintages.

The 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2020 vintages all fall below the trend line and represent Fair Value.

Of these options, buyers may find the highly-rated 2018 and 2020 vintages most compelling. Available at Market Prices of £1,693 and £1,700 respectively, both come in at a discount to today’s release. Fans of Antonio Galloni may opt for the 2018, which received 98 points from the critic, his joint-highest score of the decade.
