As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château Léoville Poyferré 2022 has been released at €84 per bottle ex-négociant, up 16.7% on the 2021 release (€72 per bottle).

It is being offered by the international trade for £1,014 per 12×75, a 17.9% increase on the 2021’s opening price (£860 a case).

In our En Primeur survey, members ranked Léoville Poyferré 7th among the top 10 value wines for Bordeaux 2022.

Critics’ scores

Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine a score of 95-97 points. He mentions in his tasting note that this wine ‘may well rest at the top of my banded score once in bottle’.

William Kelley (Wine Advocate) scored the wine 94-96 points, commenting that it ‘turned out very nicely’. He added that ‘it remains the most flamboyant and demonstrative of the three Léoville estates’.

James Suckling gave it a barrel range of 96-97 points. In his tasting note, he commented that it was ‘a very solid LP’ that was ‘polished’ and ‘thoughtful’.

Jean-Marc Quarin awarded it 99 points. He noted that ‘the wine evolves on a well-controlled power, on a great finish with noble tannicity’ and added that ‘it’s so disturbing’.

Fair Value analysis

There is no significant correlation between Château Léoville Poyferré and Neal Martin scores – the chosen critic for Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology.

Based on the chart above, buyers looking for value might want to consider options among back vintages.

The 2019 and 2016 vintages both scored 96 points from Neal Martin and are available at a discount of 23.5% and 18.6% respectively to today’s release.

The 2014 vintage also looks attractive, with 95 points from Neal Martin and a Market Price of £690 per 12×75.
