As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château Léoville-Las-Cases 2022 has been released at €230 per bottle ex-négociant, up 36.1% on the 2021 release (€169 per bottle).

It is being offered by the international trade for £2,772 per 12×75, a 42.2% increase on the 2021’s opening price (£1,950 a case).

At this price, the 2015, 2019 and 2020 look good value in relation to today’s release. See more pricing analysis below.

This year’s wine has received critical acclaim, earning 18 potential 100-point scores from critics including Neal Martin. Several have nominated the 2022 Las-Cases as a prime candidate for wine of the vintage.

Critics’ scores

Critics have been full of praise for this year’s Las-Cases. Neal Martin (Vinous) gave the wine a score of 98-100 points. In his tasting note he said ‘there is something lavish and audacious about this Saint-Julien’. He adds ‘this surpasses the 2018-2020 trio and to use that clichéd expression, is a “tour de force”’.

James Suckling gave it a barrel range of 99-100 points. In his tasting note he said ‘the tannins are totally melted in the wine and give it fantastic structure, but the texture is so fresh and vivid.’ He added that it was ‘thought-provoking’ and ‘endless’.

Meanwhile, Jean-Marc Quarin awarded it a perfect 100-points. He commented that it is ‘the meatiest, most precise, deepest and most austere Léoville Las Cases I know’ and added ‘that’s wonderful!’

William Kelley (Wine Advocate) also scored the wine 98-100 points. He said it was ‘one of the wines of the vintage’ and ‘a monument in the making’. That being said, Kelley did caution that ‘it wouldn’t surprise me if it were to shut down after a few years in bottle’ as it ‘was surprisingly open for a young Las Cases’.

Fair Value analysis

Château Léoville-Las-Cases prices are 64% correlated with Neal Martin scores. At £2,772, today’s release is coming to the market just above the line implied by Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology.

Buyers looking for other options may want to consider the 2016, which scored 98 points from Neal Martin (Vinous). Noteworthy for its ‘bewitching symmetry’, it is available at a discount of 6.2% to today’s release.

Other opportunities include the 97-point 2015, 2019 and 2020 vintages, which are available at discounts of 33.2%, 35.1% and 26.2% respectively to today’s release. The 2015, in particular, was called ‘one of the appellation’s most sophisticated offerings’.

The 95-point 2014 and 2019 are also attractive and provide an entry point into a highly sought-after label.
