As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign,  Château Gruaud Larose 2022 has been released at €69.60 per bottle ex-négociant, up 11.5% on the 2021 release (€62.40 per bottle).

It is being offered by the international trade for £840 per 12×75, a 9.4% increase on the 2021’s opening price (£768 a case).

The 2019, 2016 and 2020 vintages offer better value in relation to today’s release. See more pricing analysis below.

Critics’ scores

Neal Martin (Vinous) scored the wine 95-97 points and said he is ‘impressed by its delineation and focus; frankly, these are the nicest aromatics I’ve encountered for a while at this address’.

William Kelley (Wine Advocate) awarded it a barrel range of 94-96+, celebrating a wine that ‘confirms Gruaud’s return to the Saint-Julien élite.’

‘Vibrant, energetic, long and fresh,’ noted Jeff Leve (Wine Cellar Insider), who gave it a barrel range of 95-97 points.

Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux) scored it at 96 points, highlighting its depth of concentration and drinkability that is ‘not an easy balance to achieve in 2022’.

Fair Value analysis

There is no significant correlation between Gruaud Larose Market Prices and Neal Martin scores – the chosen critic for Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology.

Based on the chart above, buyers looking for value in back vintages might want to consider the 2019 vintage. The wine received 96 points from Neal Martin (Vinous) and is available at a discount of 22.7% to today’s release.

The 2016 vintage might also be of interest which is available at a Market Price of £658 per 12×75, a discount of 21.7% to today’s release. Likewise, the 2020 vintage received 93+ points from Neal Martin and is available at a discount of 20.2% to today’s release.

Other releases

Sarget De Gruaud Larose 2022 has been released at €19.22 per bottle ex-négociant, up slightly on the 2021 release (€19.20).
