  • Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2021 has been released at £1,608 per 12×75.
  • Neal Martin scored the wine 93-95 points.
  • The 2014 and 2017 vintages offer better value for money.

As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 2021 has been released at €132 per bottle ex-négociant, unchanged on the 2020’s opening price.

It is being offered by the international trade for £1,608 per 12×75. The 2014 and 2017 vintages look better value compared to today’s release. See more pricing analysis below.

Production levels were extremely small in 2021, with coulure and mildew claiming around two-thirds of the crop.

Critics’ scores

Neal Martin (Vinous) awarded the wine a barrel range of 93-95. In his tasting note he said the wine ‘needs more coaxing from the glass than previous vintages’ but added that it was ‘a cerebral proposition for serious Pauillac lovers’.

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) was more generous, scoring it 96-98 points. He noted that it was ‘certainly among the great wines of this vintage’ and ‘quite simply a tour de force from Technical Director Nicholas Glumineau and his team’.

He went on to say that ‘if there is one wine readers will absolutely jump on en primeur it is Pichon Comtesse’.

James Suckling scored the wine 94-95 points, as did William Kelley (Wine Advocate).

Fair Value analysis

Pichon Comtesse prices are 57% correlated to Benchmark Critic scores. Today’s opening price comes at around a 15% premium to the price implied by Liv-ex’s Fair Value methodology. However, as Galloni suggested, followers of the estate might make an exception for a high-quality wine produced in such small quantities.

Buyers looking for other options might be interested in the 2014, which is available at a 28.5% discount and has a higher score from Neal Martin of 95-points.

The 2017 vintage also looks attractive. It has the same score as today’s release and is available at a 32.8% discount.
