The most expensive white wines on the secondary market

  • Exceptionnelle Vendanges des Sept Domaines 2016, the rare Montrachet blend, is the most expensive white wine traded on Liv-ex over the past year.
  • Burgundian Grand Crus dominate the list, with Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling TBA 2017 and Screaming Eagle Sauvignon Blanc 2018 being the exceptions.

Often overlooked due to the historical prevalence of red wines on the secondary market, still white wine is an increasingly important trading category. In the past year, white wine has accounted for 16% of the total trade by value, and as our Q1 2022 report showed, Screaming Eagle Sauvignon Blanc 2018 was the third most traded wine this quarter.

The wine is also one of the most expensive still white wines traded over the past year. Today we take a look at the top ten.

Burgundy dominates the most expensive white wines

The list of the most expensive still white wines traded on Liv-ex is almost entirely made up by Grand Cru Burgundy. Wines from Domaine d’Auvenay, part of the Leroy empire (along with Domaine Leroy and Maison Leroy), take four of the ten top spots.

The most expensive white wine, however, is Exceptionnelle Vendanges des Sept Domaines, Montrachet Grand Cru 2016 – a rare blend produced by combining the harvests of seven owners in the famous Burgundian Grand Cru including DRC, Leflaive and Comtes Lafon. The wine commands a current Market Price of £353,750 per 12×75.

Other expensive Burgundian labels in the list include Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet Grand Cru 2003 and Coche-Dury’s Corton-Charlemagne 2007 and Meursault-Perrières 2008.

Germany and California make the rankings

The only exceptions to this Burgundian affair are two cult labels from Germany and California.

Awarded 99-points by James Suckling, Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling TBA 2017 is the third-most expensive white wine traded on Liv-ex.

The brand entered the Power 100 rankings for the first time last year. It took 84th place thanks to rising trade by value across 27 different wines. As explored earlier this month, Egon Müller is the most traded German wine by value – in part, thanks to its high price.

With a Market Price of £50,428, Screaming Eagle Sauvignon Blanc 2018 is the seventh-most expensive white wine traded on Liv-ex in the past year.

On an LWIN7 level, Screaming Eagle Sauvignon Blanc has been the most traded dry still white wine during this period.
