Mouton Rothschild 2017 has been released at €348 per bottle ex-negociant, a 17.1% decrease on the 2016 opening price of €420. It is being offered by UK merchants for £4,320 per case, down 16.6% in sterling terms on the 2016 release of £5,180 per 12×75.
This offer is coming out as a single tranche, with a volume reduction of 15% on 2016.
Critics have highly praised this year’s Mouton. Neal Martin awarded a score of 94-96 points noting that the wine was “unashamedly classic in style” and could be “le petit frère of the 2010”. His Vinous colleague Antonio Galloni scored the wine slightly lower at 92-95 points although he enjoyed “the energy and brightness in the 2017”.
Liv-ex members also enjoyed this year’s vintage, placing it as their sixth favourite wine in 2017. They also overestimated the expected opening price, opting for an average prediction of €370.
Today’s opening price is quite punchy, coming with a slight premium to the price implied by Liv-ex’s fair value methodology. Buyer’s perusing back vintages have a number of options. They could consider the 2014 vintage, a wine that ranks in the top ten most undervalued wines on Liv-ex at the moment, with roughly a 24% discount to fair value. Alternatively, they might see some value in the 2012 vintage.
