Domaine Chevalier 2017 released

By May 17, 2018Bordeaux 2017, Releases

Domaine Chevalier 2017 has been released at €42 per bottle ex-negociant, a 20.5% decrease on the 2016’s release price of €52.80. It is being offered by UK merchants for £520 per case, down 18.9% in sterling terms on the 2016 initial price of £648 per 12×75.

Critical commentary has been mixed. Neal Martin awarded a score of 92-94 points, appraising this vintage as “a Domaine de Chevalier of refinement rather than power”. His colleague Antonio Galloni was less keen, noting that the “the coarse tannins and disjointed feel suggest fruit that may have been shocked during the April frost.” He scored the wine 88-91 points.

It is estimated that due to frost the volume that has come to market this year is 35% lower than that of 2016. Today’s ex-London price of £520 is more than a 25% premium to the price implied by Liv-ex’s fair value methodology for a wine of this critic score. As an alternative, merchants could consider the 2014 vintage, which has the same critic score and is available in the market at a 22% discount to today’s release.

Domaine Chevalier Blanc 2017

Also released this was morning was Domaine Chevalier Blanc 2017, at an opening price of €67.20 per bottle ex-negociant, a 3.4% decrease on the 2016 price of €69.60. It is estimated that UK merchants will offer the wine for £825 per case, down 2.9% in sterling terms on the 2016 opening price of £850 per 12×75.
