Bordeaux in 2017: Firsts come last, Seconds in first, Sauternes not worst

By December 12, 2017Bordeaux, Fine Wine Market, Regions

The second wines of the Bordeaux First Growths have continued on a winning streak this year. Their index, which has gained 17.6% over the past 12 months, has significantly outperformed all other sub-indices of the Bordeaux 500 in 2017.

These wines have become known for both their increasing quality and ability to grant collectors access to top brands at lower price points.

The First Growths, represented by the Fine Wine 50, have been the weakest group in the index, up 5.5% over the same period.

Sauternes has historically been Bordeaux’s slowest mover. However, the region’s index has gained 6.7% this year, positioning it above the First Growths and only marginally below the Right Bank 50 and Left Bank 200 indices. Although their performance remains split, with Coutet, Rieussec and Yquem leading the charge, this year is finally looking like a sweeter one for the group.
