Giscours 2016 released

Giscours 2016 has been released at €44.40 per bottle ex-negociant, a 23.3% increase on the 2015 price of €36. It is being offered by UK merchants for £540 per 12×75, up 40.6% in sterling terms on the 2015 release of £385 per case.

Critical reception for this year’s offering has been positive. Neal Martin awarded the wine 93-95, praising it as “an impressive follow-up to last year’s Giscours.” James Suckling went further, giving Giscours 2016 a score of 96-97, he wondered whether it is “better than the 2015?”. Jancis Robinson, bestowing a score of 17 points, also praised this Giscours as “a real crowd pleaser”.

Giscours has traditionally been considered a value wine (release price below £500) by Liv-ex members, who placed it ninth in a list of value wines for this campaign. This vintage is entering the market at a price higher than all others bar the 2005. Whether Giscours continues to be as much of a crowd pleaser at this release price, which takes it out of the value bracket, remains to be seen.

Buyers might continue to find value in the 2015 vintage, which carries a higher Wine Advocate score, is available at 14.9% discount to the current release, and was described as “the best since the 1961” by Neal Martin.
