Palmer 2016 has been released at €240 per bottle ex-negociant, up 14.3% on the 2015 release price of €210. It is being offered by merchants for £2,880 per 12×75, an increase of 31% in Sterling terms on the 2015 release of £2,200 per case. This is the highest ever opening price for any vintage of Palmer.
Critics have praised the cerebral qualities of this year’s Palmer. James Suckling awarded the wine 99-100 points noting there is “an underlying intellectual serenity to this wine. You taste it, and you want to know and experience it more.” Neal Martin also referred to the wine as “intellectual”, commenting that this Palmer was “less extrovert and more classic in style compared to recent vintages.” He scored Palmer 2016 95-97 points.
For buyers more interested in value than intellect, the 2005 or 2009 might look attractive. Both wines scored 97 points, have several years in bottle and can be found at around a 20% discount to the 2016.
