Critical response

The 2023 vintage of Grand-Puy Ducasse received a varied critical response.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Independent) awarded a score of 90-92+ points, describing notes of ‘cedar, pencil lead notes, blackberries, Bing cherries, and raspberries, plus an undercurrent of dried Provence herbs’.

Neal Martin (Vinous) gave a barrel score of 92-94 points, calling the wine ‘excellent’ and adding that it ‘may surpass their 2022’.

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) awarded the wine a score of 93-95 points. According to him, the 2023 is ‘a wine of grandeur and sweeping intensity, seriously impressive’.

By contrast, William Kelley (The Wine Advocate) gave a score of 86-88 points, noting a ‘somewhat herbal finish’.

Pricing analysis

While today’s release comes at a discount to last year’s, it remains one of the more expensive vintages available on the market today. There are options in back vintages for buyers in search of value.

The 93-point 2020 vintage, Neal Martin’s joint-highest scoring vintage of the decade, may provide reasonable value to buyers. It is available at a Market Price of £236 — an 18.1% discount to today’s release.

The 2019 and 2018 vintages, while receiving a slightly lower score of 91 points from Martin, benefit from extra time in bottle and are available at a discount to today’s release. While the 2018 vintage is the least expensive of the two, fans of Jane Anson may opt for the 2019, her joint-highest scoring vintage of the decade.
