The flurry of activity for Bordeaux 2005 in the build up to the release of Robert Parker’s ten year retrospective of the vintage has now died down, with a number of prices also beginning to slip after some buyers were disappointed by his scores for the Left Bank.
This has been the case for Margaux 2005. With Parker twice awarding the wine a potential 100 points in barrel, many anticipated a three digit score and prices crept up: at the end of 2014, it traded for £4,950 per 12×75. In the six weeks before the report was made available, it traded several times for between £5,200 and £5,350. Yet, after it failed to achieve a ‘perfect’ score – it maintained its score of 98+ – activity slowed and prices lagged: it traded today for £5,000.
Could there be room for Margaux 2005 to climb? Since En Primeur release in 2006, it has only gained 17% – and other critics have been more effusive in their praise of the wine. James Suckling awarded it 100 points, calling it “a sleeping beauty that will be utterly captivating when it awakes”, while Neal Martin awarded it 99: “sheer class”. Parker also notes that it “promises to be better in another 5-10 years”.
