Montrose – the last of the major Chateaux to release its wines this year – has come out at €88.8 per bottle ex-negociant, up 54.2% on both the 2013 and 2012 (€57.6). This is significantly higher than expected by much of the international trade: the average estimation of respondents to the Liv-ex members’ En Primeur survey was €62.7 per bottle.
The wine is being offered by merchants at £850 per 12×75, making it the fourth most expensive vintage on the market: only the 2005, 2009 and 2010 have higher prices. Several back vintages appear to offer relative value. In particular, the 95-point 2008 is available on the secondary market at £525 per 12×75.
Neal Martin reported: “Dare I say, this is one grand vin that comes perilously close to matching the heights of the 2009 and 2010. This is a brilliant Montrose, one of the best you will find on the Left Bank this vintage.”
Judging by the price, the Chateau seems to agree.
