March was the twelfth month in a row that the Liv-ex Fine Wine 100 Index lost ground – an unprecedented number of consecutive falls in the index’s history. It fell 1.46% to close the month on 248.8, while the Liv-ex Fine Wine 50 dropped 1.3% to close on 283.40. March levels for all Liv-ex indices can be seen here.
Italy was at the top of the Liv-ex 100 movers’ table, with Ornellaia 2009 (96 from James Suckling and 97 from Antonio Galloni) rising 8.5%. Leoville Poyferre 2003 was another strong performer; at just over £1,000 and with 98 from Parker, it is currently the cheapest Bordeaux wine in the Liv-ex 100.
At the other end of the table, the most recent physical vintages of Pontet Canet came under fire: both the 2009 and 2010 saw prices fall. Is this a sign that the chateau’s decision to release its 2013 early and at last year’s price has not been well met by traders?
