Burgundy prices soared in 2022 as collectors flocked to the region’s prestigious wines.
Fast forward a year, and in the current downward market, Burgundy is one of the regions that is feeling the price correction the hardest. Burgundy’s share of regional trade dropped from 31.2% of the total last year to just 24.0% in 2023, and the Burgundy 150 index is down 15.7% year to date.
However, white Burgundy has remained relatively unaffected by this trend.
White Burgundy wines are cheaper on average than their red counterparts (with a few exceptions), but the former’s price performance has also been much stronger. This is in part due to the fact that white wines are primarily earlier drinking wines, which means stock reduces relatively quickly upon their release, keeping prices stable.
Over the last three years, the white components of the Burgundy 150 index have outperformed both the index as a whole and its red components.
Year-to-date, the top price performer in the Burgundy 150 index was Joseph Drouhin, Montrachet Grand Cru, Marquis de Laguiche, 2018, followed by Clos de Tart, Clos de Tart Grand Cru 2014 and Coche-Dury, Meursault, 2013.

White Burgundy’s continued success can be seen through the increasing numbers of transactions it generates on the exchange. In fact, as Burgundy’s share of total trade has dropped, white Burgundy’s has increased, going from 2.3% of total trade by value in 2021 to 3.3% in 2023.
Buyers in the US are benefitting from these falling prices; Coche-Dury was the most popular producer among US merchants, followed by Domaine des Lambrays, and Georges Roumier, Armand Rousseau and Leflaive.
The chart below shows that merchants in the US bought high volumes of grand cru white wines from Burgundy in 2023.
