Vieux Château Certan 2022 released en Primeur

  • Vieux Château Certan 2022 has been released at £3,300 per 12×75.  
  • Neal Martin scored the wine 97-99 points, calling it ‘very expressive this year’. 
  • Buyers looking for value might want to consider the 2019 and 2014 vintages.   

As part of this year’s Bordeaux En Primeur campaign, Vieux Chateau Certan has been released at €276 per bottle ex-négociant, up 21.1% on the 2021 release (€228).  

It is being offered by the international trade for £3,300 per 12×75, up 20.6% on the 2021s opening price (£2,736 per 12×75).  

The 2019 and 2014 vintages look better value in relation to today’s release. See more pricing analysis below.  

Critics’ scores  

Neal Martin (Vinous) gave the wine a barrel range of 97-99 points, calling it ‘very expressive this year’. He mentions that ‘while it is a real Left Bank/Right Bank hybrid’ it is ‘quintessentially Pomerol’. 

Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux) awarded the wine a score of 96 points, noting the ‘exuberance of the vintage’ and mentioning that the wine ‘will no doubt increase with age’. 

James Suckling gave the wine a barrel range of 98-99 points and noted the wines ‘excellent length’.   

Fair Value analysis  

Using Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology, Vieux Chateau Certan prices are 75.6% correlated to Neal Martin scores. At £3,300 per 12×75, the release is coming to the market above the price suggested by the fair value methodology. 

Buyers looking for value will want to consider the 2019 vintage. With 99 points from Neal Martin, it is currently available at £2,768 per 12×75, a 16.1% discount to today’s release. 

The 2014 vintage, with a score of 96 points, also provides value, at a discount of 51.5% to today’s release.  

The 2017 and 2012 vintages also look attractive, falling below fair the value line.
