Lascombes was recently bought by Lawrence Wine Estates, a Napa-based owner. This year also saw the appointment of a new wine director, Axel Heinz, who joins the Château after 18 years at Ornellaia and Masseto. In light of these changes, the 2022 marks the debut of a new label from Lascombes.

Critics’ scores

Neal Martin (Vinous) has not assigned an En Primeur score to this vintage, stating that he was ‘perplexed by this wine to the extent that [he] will wait longer and review it when in bottle’.

For those who did assign a score, results were fairly similar on average. ‘Needs a little more at the finish to be in the big leagues’, said James Suckling, who rated it at 93-94 points.

Jeff Leve (Wine Cellar Insider) scored the wine at 92-94 points, lauding the ‘lush, concentrated’ profile while adding the caveat that ‘it is not for the oak averse’.

‘Plenty of lush fruit and personality to enjoy here’, noted Jane Anson (Inside Bordeaux) who gave the wine a score of 93 points.

Fair Value analysis

There is no significant correlation between Lascombes Market Prices and Neal Martin scores – the chosen critic for Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology.

Based on the chart above, buyers looking for value in back vintages might want to consider the 2015 and 2019 vintages. Lascombes received 92 points from Neal Martin in both years – its highest score from the critic in the last decade. Both vintages are available at a discount of 23.6% and 26.3% to today’s release.

The 91-point 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2021are also all available at a discount to the 2022.
