Recent trading activity

California has been in focus this week accounting for 19% of trade by value. Screaming Eagle Sauvignon Blanc 2019, Spottswoode St. Helena 2019 and Caymus 2020 were all in the spotlight. There was also continued activity around Promontory following the release of its 2018 vintage on Wednesday.

Upcoming Bibi Graetz Balocchi di Colore release

It is being reported that Bibi Graetz will be releasing three new wines via La Place de Bordeaux on Friday 3rd March.

According to the Drink Business, the wines form a trilogy – the Balocchi di Colore (literally, ‘the toys of Colore’) – and will be distributed exclusively through La Place in mixed cases of three bottles from the 2020 vintage.

The wines included in the Balocchi di Colore Assortment Case are No. 1, No. 3 and No.8.

In light of the upcoming release, today we look at opportunities among one of Bibi Graetz’ other wines, Testamatta.

Opportunities among Testamatta back vintages

Bibi Graetz’s 2020 Testamatta was released at £816 per 12×75 back in September. Since then, its Market Price has fallen 36.8% to £515 per case, making it the cheapest vintage currently available on the market.

It’s current Market Price also falls below the trend line implied by Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology, making it an attractive option to buyers.

Liv-ex’s ‘Fair Value’ methodology hypothesises that, over time, wines will tend toward their ‘Fair Value’ price. Typically, though not always, the most ‘undervalued’ wines provide the best returns as the price moves up to ‘Fair Value’ in the secondary market, whereas ‘overvalued’ wines provide the worst return.

Looking at the chart below, prices for Bibi Graetz’s Testamatta are 91% correlated to age. Buyers looking for options in back vintages might want to consider the 2012 and 2011 vintages, which both have several years in bottle and fall below the line.

The 2016 and 2015 vintages also look attractive. Monica Larner (Wine Advocate) awarded the 2016 vintage 96 points and said she ‘was blown away each time’ she tasted it.
