Burgundy was at the heart of market activity in the middle of the week, driven by its 2000 and 2014 vintages and the wines of Domaine Leroy and Domaine Coquard-Loison-Fleurot.

From Bordeaux, Right Bank wines Château Ausone, Pétrus, and Château La Gaffelière, saw the most demand. Champagne was the third-most traded region, led by Louis Roederer Cristal 2014 and Krug Vintage Brut 2008.

Outside of France, Italy and the USA made up less than 10% of total trade.

The 2014 vintage leads price performance over three years

Looking at the Bordeaux vintages 2010-2016, the 2014 has been the best-performing over the past three years, rising 29.5% on average. Its returns have been greater than those offered by top vintages like 2010 (+24.6%), 2015 (+17.2%), and 2016 (+21.9%), all the while representing a lower entry point into the market.

With an average price of £2,847 per 12×75 case, the 2014 is currently more expensive than 2011 and 2013 but remains cheaper on average than 2012 and the ‘on’ vintages.

As previously examined, 2014 is the best rated ‘off’ vintage of the modern era. It has an average Benchmark Critic score of 93-points, more than the 89-point 2013 and the 92-point 2012, and just a point below the likes of 2010 and 2016.

The value it offers has not gone unnoticed, as 2014 has become the second-most traded Bordeaux ‘off’ vintage so far this year, after the 2017s.

The table below shows the price performance of individual Bordeaux vintages (2010-2016), based on the wines in the Liv-ex Bordeaux 500 index, over different timeframes.

While the 2014 vintage leads over three- and two-year periods, its steady rise has slowed in the past year. Here the second least expensive vintage, the 2011, has taken over as the best-performer, managing a 15.5% rise.

Top vintages, which have recently been met with heightened demand, have also seen price increases. Two of the most traded vintages, namely 2010 and 2016, are both up 15.3%.
