  • Léoville Barton’s 2019, 2009 and 2015 vintages have been the biggest price risers from the estate.

The wine industry has paid tributes to Anthony Barton, owner of the Bordeaux second growth Châteaux Léoville Barton and the third growth Langoa Barton. The London wine club 67 Pall Mall wrote on social media that ‘Anthony was a true gentleman of the wine world, modest of his incredible achievements’, while Jancis Robinson MW said that ‘with the demise of Anthony Barton […] the Bordeaux wine trade has lost its most genuinely entertaining, and handsome, participant’. Many others expressed their condolences and remembered Barton’s long-lasting legacy.

The secondary market reacted with firm demand for many of his wines. Léoville Barton 2010 even traded at a record high of £1,175 per 12×75, up 39.9% on its release price, on the day of the announcement.

The wine was most recently described by Neal Martin (Vinous) as ‘a multi-dimensional Léoville-Barton with tobacco-infused black fruit gripping the finish and not letting go’.

Barton’s estates on the secondary market

Léoville Barton is the second most traded Saint-Julien estate by volume in the secondary market since records began in 2002.

However, the second growth Léoville Barton has not only surpassed Langoa Barton in terms of trading activity, but also price performance.
