  • The 2017, 2016 and 2009 were its most active vintages, while 2012, 2014 and 2010 were the biggest price risers.

The most traded Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

Last year, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru estates accounted for 15.5% of Bordeaux’s trade by value. Among them, Château Angélus was the most actively traded by value, and the second most traded by volume, surpassed only by Château Figeac.

Angélus’ most traded vintages by value were 2017, 2016 and 2009. The 2016 last changed hands at £2,880 per 12×75, down 19.5% on its release price.

At this price and with 97-points from Neal Martin (Vinous), the 2016 falls below the Fair Value line, as the chart below shows.

Other vintages that offer relative value for money include the 2019, which received 96-98 points from Martin and is available for s£2825.

The 2014 also looks keenly poised. At £2,398 per 12×75, the vintage is among the most affordable from the producer and has 96-points from Martin. Its price has also been rising, up 6.4% in 2021, making it the third-best price performer from the château.

The 2010 has been the second biggest riser, up 7.8%. Unlike many 2010s which sharply declined in value post-release, Angélus’ trajectory has been largely positive.

However, the 2012 vintage has offered the biggest returns from the château, having risen 8.1% in 2021. The wine was released in a special black and gold bottle to celebrate its promotion to Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé “A” in the same year, which immediately moved the market. It has also been among the biggest movers from Angélus over the past five years, having risen 37.2% to command a Market Price of £4,000 per case.
