The California 50 index, which tracks the price performance of five of the state’s leading labels, has enjoyed a strong five year stretch. During this time it has provided better returns than many of the sub-indices that make up the Liv-ex Fine Wine 1000.
The index has risen 16.5% year-to-date, more than the Italy 100 (10.0%), Rhone 100 (12.0%) and Bordeaux 500 (8.2%).
Both year-to-date and over the past year, the California 50 lags behind just two of the Liv-ex 1000 sub-indices – the Burgundy 150 and Champagne 50.

Top traded Californian wines by value

The California 50 tracks five of the state’s leading labels: Harlan, Ridge, Dominus, Screaming Eagle and Opus One.
Last month we noted that Ridge has been the best-performing of these estates this year, with a price performance of 22.7%.
Although the best performer year-to-date has been Harlan 2017 (13.7%), this month has been Dominus 2018, whose ‘Wine of the Year’ nod from Wine Spectator last week caused an immediate jump in the market. The wine is up in price over 30% since the start of the month and has been trading actively.
