Phélan Ségur 2020 En Primeur: “classy and polished”

  • The wine is available at £384 (12×75) SEP.
  • Neal Martin wrote it might be the “best value for money” in Saint-Estèphe.
  • Prices for Phélan Ségur show stronger correlation to age than critic scores.

Château Phélan Ségur 2020 has been released for €30.6 per bottle ex-négociant, up 15.9% on the 2019’s opening price.

The wine is being offered by the international trade for £384 per dozen, up 17.4% on the current Market Price of the 2019.

Indeed, the 2019 presents a compelling Fair Value alternative, boasting the same score as the 2020 despite costing less. See more Fair Value analysis below.

Critical Opinion

Neal Martin (Vinous) scored the new release 93-95. He noted it “conveyed more substance than recent vintages” and that, “this impressive Saint-Estèphe has great potential and might well represent the appellation’s best value for money.”

Antonio Galloni rated it 91-93 and called it “classy and polished”, saying he was especially admiring of the “aromatic presence and persistence”.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (The Wine Advocate) gave it a 90-92+, and Jane Anson (Decanter) 94-points.

Jeb Dunnuck awarded it 94-96, saying that, “the 2020 Château Phélan Ségur looks to be another incredible wine from the team of Véronique Dausse”.

Fair Value

Buyers looking for a Fair Value alternative might wish to consider the 2019, which has the same Benchmark Critic score but is 15% cheaper.

The 2009, Neal Martin’s highest-scored vintage (95-points), also costs just 4.2% more than today’s release.

Prices for Phélan Ségur, however, show stronger correlation to age than critic scores. Based on this, the 2013 looks to offer very good value for money at just £195 per case; though stronger “off” vintages such as the 2012, 2014 and 2017 are also options.
