The Rhone 100 closed January at 202.01, breaking through 200 for the first time in its 17-year history.

The Rhone has historically dragged behind the other major regions, but its performance of late has been impressive. The sub-index rose 7.37% over the past year, trailing only the Champagne 50 and Italy 100, as seen in the chart below.

Northern Rhone wines have slightly outperformed their southern counterparts, with a rise of 9.5%. The Southern Rhone was up 7.1% over the same period.

In our recent Rhone Report (now available to all), we observed a shift in activity toward the wines of Chateauneuf-du-Pape in 2020. The sub-region made up 55% of trade by value for the Rhone in 2020, its largest ever. Cote Rotie, Hermitage, Condrieu, and Cornas took up the lion’s share of the remaining 45%.

LIVE bids for Rhone wines increased by 120% through 2020. Offers saw a 10% rise. Since the start of this year LIVE bids have increased an additional 48%, taking the bid:offer ratio to 0.60 – a ratio of 0.50 has historically  pointed to positive sentiment in the market. After many years sitting at the back of the pack, might 2021 be the year that the Rhone breaks free?
