Trade picked up the second week of November led by an upsurge in Champagne and additional increases for Italy and the USA. The USA share was led by strong performance of Napa wines with Opus One and Screaming Eagle combing for the top four trade by value for the region. The holiday season is not too far away and Champagne’s share historically climbs in the months prior.
It is also one of the slower weeks for Bordeaux and Burgundy as smaller regions continue to expand their share of trade.
Sassicaia remains a favourite since the 2015 became the Wine Spectator top wine of 2018. Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner awarded the 2016 “a highly deserved 100-point score.” The 2016 now trades at a 79% premium to its original UK release price of £1,270 per 12×75.
Louis Roederer Cristal 2008, awarded 19.5/20 by Jancis Robinson, also traded above its UK merchant release of £1,430. The Louis Roederer Cristal 2008 Rosé counterpart fell just shy of the top five trade by value this week. With the help of a couple large trades Cristal has been one of the largest movers by volume this week.
Cheval Blanc 2007 has suffered a heavy decline in Market Price since its release in 2008. After a 36% return over the last five years Cheval Blanc is still trading 10% lower than its initial UK release price (£3,600 per 12×75).
Neal Martin’s Bordeaux 2018
Neal Martin tasted the 2018 vintage away from the UGC launch, instead visiting the wineries several months later in the midst of harvest. Martin noted that “the 2018 vintage is very good to excellent quality.” You can read our summary here.
Wine Spectator top 100 wines of 2019 coming soon
