By June 5, 2019Bordeaux 2018

Montrose 2018 has been released at €126.40 per bottle ex-negociant, up 31.7% on the 2017 release (€96). This is also 23.9% higher than the expected (not wanted) price by Liv-ex members (€102). It is being offered by the trade for £1,560 per 12×75, up 32.8% on the 2017 release (£1,175).

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) scored the wine 95-98 points. In his tasting note, he said that “the 2018 Montrose appears to have a tremendous future” and added that “it is a stellar wine in the making”.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (Wine Advocate) awarded 96-98 points and said it was “a magnificent monster of a Montrose!”

James Suckling gave it a slightly higher 98-99 points and added that it was a “big and muscular wine”.

Prices for Montrose are 88% correlated to our ‘Benchmark Critic’ series. Based on today’s release, the wine is coming to market above the line implied by our ‘Fair Value’ methodology for followers of Galloni and Perrotti-Brown.

For those who side with James Suckling, the wine offers fair value. That being said, the 2016, which Neal Martin awarded 99 points and said was “up there with the First Growths”, is available at an 8% discount.

With 97 points from Neal Martin and a Market Price of £1,270 per 12×75, the 2005 vintage may also be an option.
