Ausone 2018 released – “an incredible wine”

By June 13, 2019Bordeaux 2018

Ausone 2018 has been released at €565 per bottle ex-negociant, up 17.7% on the 2017 release (€480). The wine is being offered by the international trade for £7,000 per 12×75, up 24% on the 2017 release of £5,640 per case.

Critics have praised this year’s Ausone. Antonio Galloni (Vinous) awarded the wine 97-100 points and said it was “off the charts”. He went on to say that “it is without question on of the wines of the vintage”.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW (Wine Advocate) also gave it a potentially perfect score of 98-100. In her tasting note she said it finished “with epic length and heart-stopping beauty”.

James Suckling also commented on Ausone’s “incredible beauty” and awarded it 99-100 points.

Other commentators included Jane Anson (Decanter, 98-100), who said it was “an incredible wine”, and Jeff Leve (The Wine Cellar Insider, 98-100), who commented: “if you have the money there are few wines at this level of quality produced from any vineyard in the world”.

Liv-ex members also ranked Ausone 2018 as their 10th best wine of the vintage.

Prices for Ausone are 58% correlated to our ‘Benchmark Critic’ scores. Based on today’s release price of £7,000, the wine is coming to market below the line implied by our ‘Fair Value’ methodology. It is also available at a small discount to the highly rated 2016 (NM 99) and therefore looks like a solid En Primeur offer.

Those perusing back-vintage may want to consider the 2006 and 2008 which are available at discounts to today’s release.
