By January 2, 2019Fine Wine Market, Indices

The Liv-ex Fine Wine 100 Index – the industry benchmark – closed 2018 on 312.05, down 0.2% on last year’s close. The index has been very stable in the past year, trading within a narrow 2% range.

All of the top movers in December were ‘on-vintage’ Bordeaux, with the exception of one Champagne – Cristal 2009. A First Growth occupied the top spot – Haut Brion 2000 yielded an increase of 4.7%. It was also the top traded wine by value in the week before Christmas.

There was more diversity among last month’s biggest fallers with wines from Australia, California, Bordeaux and the Rhone featuring in the bottom five. The 2008 vintage of Penfolds Grange, the only Australian label that made it into the 2018 Power 100, dipped by 3.4% in December.

Clos Papes, Chateauneuf du Pape 2015 was the biggest faller, down by 5.6%. The wine, which received 97 points from The Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski, last traded at £614 per 12×75, just below its current Market Price.
