Giscours 2017

Giscours 2017 has been released at €41.40 per bottle ex-negociant, down 7% on the 2016 release of €44.40. It is being offered at a recommended retail price of £510 per 12×75, a decrease of 6% in sterling terms on the 2016 release of £540 per case.

Overall, critical reception for this year’s Giscours has been positive. Neal Martin (Vinous) scored the wine 90-92 points and commented that “it does not make an immediate impact but rather grows on you”. He goes on to say that “it will be an approachable Giscours compared to the 2015 and 2016, but one with breeding and class”.

Roger Voss (Wine Enthusiast) was more generous and awarded a score of 94-96 points. In his tasting note he suggested that the wine “has a fine future ahead of it”.

Due to frost, production volumes were reduced by 55%. The volume of wine brought to market was 35% lower than last year, a relative increase.

Buyers looking for value during this year’s En Primeur campaign may once again be tempted by alternative back vintages. Giscours 2014, for example, carries a higher score (93 NM) and is available at a 23% discount to today’s release. Many other older vintages are available for less, albeit with lower scores.

Still, Giscours is considered a rising star by many, so this year’s release on drastically reduced volume may find willing buyers.
