Talking Trade – America First

Bordeaux trade

Activity on the market was steady last week and Bordeaux’s trade share quietly increased after hitting some low notes in February. As is usual, trade for the region was focused on vintages from the most recent ten years. However, Latour and Mouton Rothschild from the legendary 1945 vintage also saw some trade.

Thoughts are beginning to turn towards the upcoming Bordeaux En Primeur campaign. Bloomberg wrote of Lafleur’s optimism despite the spring frosts that devastated areas of Pomerol last April.  Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth also announced his imminent departure for France in an article for the publication, published yesterday.

America First

The week’s top traded wine by value was Dominus 2014, which was released by the estate in September of last year. Robert Parker called it “a sexy, opulent, layered, multidimensional wine” and “a beauty that is already drinking gorgeously”. He awarded it 97 points. Last year, Liv-ex compared Opus One and Dominus, highlighting latter’s higher scores but lower prices.

Margaux high

Margaux 2015 traded at another new high today of £12,248 per 12×75. The wine has continued to attract attention with its string of high critic scores and commemorative bottle, despite its lofty price.

Also in the news

In last week’s FT, Jancis Robinson explored wine storage solutions for wine collectors, also referencing the ability of some providers to offer valuations based on Liv-ex data. PYMNTS magazine featured an article on Liv-ex’s role in the market (in the downloadable report).

In languages other than English, Falstaff (Germany) looked at Germany’s top wines and Wine World (Chinese) took a look at top Burgundy producers.
