Talking Trade- Bordeaux’s back, Liv-ex 50 climbs

After a disappointing April, Bordeaux’s total share of trade by value picked up to 71.7% in the first full week of May, returning to a level close to the historic average. Alongside Bordeaux’s bounce back, the Liv-ex 50 rallied after three consecutive weeks of falling; it closed on Thursday 0.6% higher than the previous week.

Burgundy also saw an increased trade share, while trade for the USA decreased after two weeks in which wines from the region traded heavily.

Figeac 2013 topped the trade by value and volume table this week, building on the positive start to the month made by the brand, after the inclusion of Figeac 2012 in the table last week. There is anticipation building around the forthcoming release of Figeac 2016, which received an in-barrel score of 98-100 from Neal Martin, perhaps explaining the recent activity in the secondary market.

Latour 2005 appears in the trade by value table for the first time since the ex-chateau release in March.

Italian wines continue to regularly appear in the trade by volume table. This week the region accounted for 6.7% of trade by value, yet 12% of trade by volume.

Bordeaux 2016 Update

Liv-ex interviewed Jane Anson, Decanter’s Bordeaux based correspondent and reviewer, who chose 2005 as her favourite vintage. You can read the interview here.

The results of Liv-ex members’ En Primeur 2016 survey were published on Monday. Members thought that Lafite Rothschild was the wine of the vintage and awarded 2016 as a whole a score of 95.9. This places it ahead of all vintages bar 2009 and 2010.

This year’s En Primeur campaign has started to gather momentum at a rather leisurely pace.  Branaire Ducru opened proceedings on Tuesday with a 17.7% increase per 12x75in Sterling terms, Ormes de Pez followed on Wednesday. Clerc Milon moved into new territory opening at £600 per case in London, releasing just before Alter Ego Palmer on Thursday. Finally Rieussec and Cantemerle came out earlier today. Analysis on all of next week’s releases will be published here on Liv-ex Insights, and tweeted with the #bdx16 as they happen.
