Calon Segur
Calon Segur has been released at €62.40 per bottle ex-negociant, 17.7% higher than the opening price of the 2015 (€53). It is being offered by the international trade for £760 per case, up 33.3% in sterling terms on the 2015 release price of £570 per 12×75.
Critics have highly praised this year’s vintage. James Suckling, who scored the wine 98-99, thought that it might be the best Calon Segur ever, praising the wine’s “classic, historical character that really excites me.” Neal Martin awarded the wine a score of 95-97 points, noting that “this is easily the best Calon Segur that I have ever tasted from barrel.”
Calon Segur has traditionally been considered a value wine (release price under £500) by Liv-ex members, who placed the wine second in a list of value wines for this campaign. Although Calon was not released in this price bracket, the critical acclaim the wine has received could mean there is still value at this opening price, placing it below the great vintages of 2005, 2009 and 2010 yet with a higher critic score. Alternatively, there might be value in last year’s release which is the cheapest recent vintage available.
Phelan Segur
Phelan Segur has also been released at €32.40 per bottle ex-negociant, up 12.5% on the initial price of the 2015 (€28.80). It is being offered by UK merchants for £415 per case, a 38.3% increase in sterling terms on the 2015 release price of £300 per 12×75.
Neal Martin scored Phelan Segur 2016 92-94 points, commenting that the wine is “a Saint-Estephe that is getting better and better.” Whether the market will welcome this Phelan Segur entering as the highest priced wine of recent vintages remains to be seen.
