Alter Ego Palmer 2016 released

Alter Ego Palmer 2016

Alter Ego Palmer 2016 has been released at €49 per bottle ex-negociant, up 11.3% on the 2015. It is being offered by merchants for £560 per 12×75, up 18.1% on the 2015 release of £474 in Sterling terms.

This is a wine that has divided critics to some degree. Neal Martin’s score of 89-91 for the wine is lower than scores from several others. He described it as having “scents of blood orange and blueberries soaring from the glass” but complains about its grainy tannins and sharp acidity, though he predicts it will improve. James Suckling was more generous with 95-96 points, noting that it is “so impressive how it fills your mouth yet remains fresh”.

Buyers looking for relative value might look to a number of Alter Ego back vintages with several years in bottle, shown above.

Collectors of the wine should note that production this year was down 45% on 2015.
