Yesterday, James Molesworth released the first of his 2016 Bordeaux En Primeur scores.
In a previous report, Molesworth says that “in 2016, the entire region was given a chance by Mother Nature to perform well and yields were normal”. Adding that “the pieces are in place for the best year since 2010, though I am not putting anything right next to that true benchmark just yet”.
He continues that “Bordeaux has reversed its recent trend line. Vintages ’11, ’12, and ’13 took the region down a few pegs after the highs of 2009 and ’10. But with a very solid 2014 and potentially even better ’15, things are looking up. And here comes 2016, perhaps even better still.”
Molesworth’s latest report contains scores for the 43 highest-rated Bordeaux reds that showed best in barrel samples.
The top spots were awarded to Ducru Beaucaillou, Leoville Las Cases, Mondotte and Pavie. All these wines received scores of 97-100.
This 2016 vintage of Leoville Las Cases scored significantly more than the 2015 vintage (94-97). Molesworth described the wine as “focused and ridiculously long”.
