A healthy March

The wine trade, press and critics are currently in Bordeaux tasting the 2016 vintage, and early indications suggest that the quality of the wines is high. The market also continues to look healthy. March was an active month: trade on the Exchange increased by both value and volume, while the indices unanimously pointed upwards. An advantageous situation? We’ll see as the releases come out.

Burgundy strength

Bordeaux’s trade share continued to hover at around the same level as in the previous month, with the region taking 67% by value. Burgundy’s share remained high at 14%, nearly double its historical share on average. Champagne accounted for an above average 7%, boosted by Bollinger Rd 2002 and Dom Perignon 2006 which were among the top traded wines of the month.

First Growths Fall

Lafite Rothschild 2010 was the only First Growth to feature among the top ten traded wines by value in March. Overall, the Premier Cru accounted for a relatively low 24% by value. Cheval Blanc and Montrose both had strong months, taking 4.5% and 3.3% respectively. The most active Bordeaux vintages were the three recent ‘greats’, 2010, 2009 and 2005.

Indices rise further

The Liv-ex 1000 closed March at another record high of 306.7, representing a 1.2% increase on February. All of the sub-indices were up this month, with the Rhone 100 increasing the most month on month (+2.3%). The Liv-ex 100 was also up marginally at 304.3 (+0.7%). It has now risen for an unprecedented sixteen months.
