The industry benchmark – the Liv-ex Fine Wine 100 index – increased for the ninth consecutive month in August. It gained 2.9% to close on 276.83. It is now at its highest level since March 2013. The First Growths led the charge with the Liv-ex Fine Wine 50 Index closing on 317.38, up 3.1%.

Wines from three French regions appeared among the top performers in August. High-scoring Vieux Chateau Certan 2009 (WA 99) was the highest riser from Bordeaux, while Burgundy’s Armand Rousseau, Chambertin 2010 increased by 10.8%.

A number of wines from the “great” Bordeaux vintages dipped in August. Most of these had already made strong gains since the fine wine market started to rally at the end of last year. Pichon Lalande 2000, for example, increased 19.1% from £1,475 in November to £1,758 in July.

The Rhone’s Beaucastel, Chateauneuf Du Pape 2012 was the biggest faller last month, dropping 6.1%.
