Risers and fallers: Second wines and Sauternes 2006

By February 22, 2016Bordeaux, Regions

Over the past week Liv-ex has analysed price variations – the highest and lowest Market Prices against the current and release prices – for wines from four of the six sub-indices of the Bordeaux 500. The charts below show the same data for wines of the final two sub-indices: the Second Wines 50, which have increased the most on average, and the Sauternes 50, which have dropped the most.

All five of the second wines of the First Growths from 2006 have made staggering gains since release. Carruades Lafite 2006 is up 351.2%, though it is 52.3% off peak. In August 2011 its market price – £3,875 per 12×75 – was more than ten times higher than its release of £375. Bahans Haut Brion 2006 has gained the least, but is still up by 96.7%.

The picture for Sauternes is quite different: all five of the wines within the index have dropped since En Primeur. Steepest faller Yquem 2006 is available for less than half (-53.6%) of its release price and is at its lowest level ever.
