This week Liv-ex reported that all of its major indices moved up in June, including the Liv-ex Fine Wine 100 which is now in positive territory over a one year period for the first time since November 2013. July has seen a less positive start for the Liv-ex 50, which slipped 0.3% this week.
With Robert Parker’s ten-year retrospective of Bordeaux 2005 released on Monday, the region’s trade share bounced back from the low levels seen in June. “Other” regions – which include the USA, Australia, Spain and others – continued to see relatively high levels of activity, buoyed by trade for 100-point Screaming Eagle 2012.
Accordingly, the table of wines most traded by value (below) is dominated by Bordeaux 2005s. Angelus, Mission Haut Brion and Cheval Blanc 2005 were all newly awarded the perfect 100 points by Robert Parker in his June report, while Cos d’Estournel 2005 lost one point: it dropped from 98 to 97 – though it is still considered a “great success” and “a beauty … certainly the top wine of St.-Estèphe” by the critic.
Pape Clement 2012, which was awarded 97 points in bottle (up from 92-95 in barrel) in Parker’s April report, traded in high volume this week. Its price has climbed since the upgrade: in early April, it traded for as low as £400. Its latest trade price – £475 – represents a 19% increase.
