Last year we looked at the market prices of the (then) 39 Bordeaux wines that were scored 100 points by Robert Parker. Since Parker’s retrospective review of the 2005 vintage there are several more wines with three-digit scores – but where are prices now?
The chart above shows the 29 ‘perfect’ wines that can be purchased for less than £5,000 per 12×75. There are many others – such as Petrus 2000 at £33,800 – that far exceed that, elevated by small production levels and exclusivity. For the majority of wines there has been little price movement in a year, and there are still 12 are available for £2,000 or less. The 2009s and 2010 at this end of the table have been joined by several of the new 100-point 2005s. This may be because they have not had time to appreciate in price – or their 100-point status has not been fully embraced. Parker’s rescoring of the vintage caused debate among the trade (as we detailed in the July Cellar Watch Market Report) and also highlighted difference of opinion among the critics: Neal Martin awards Parker’s 100-point Larcis Ducasse 2005 – available at £2,000 – just 87 points.
Whether you see the cheaper end of the table as value might therefore depend on your view of perfection. But for those who share the same tastebuds as Parker, there would seem to be plenty of opportunity.
