The Liv-ex Fine Wine 50 Index rose 0.54% this week after finishing May in positive territory (up 0.08% on April’s close). Italy and Champagne saw high levels of activity at the expense of Bordeaux: its share dipped comfortably below 70%. Champagne was boosted by trade in Bollinger, Grande Annee, 2004 (£428 per 12×75), Bollinger, Rd 2002 (£952) and Perrier Jouet, Grand Brut, NV (£176).

Pontet Canet 2009 and 2010 both hit record levels after being awarded a perfect 100 points by Robert Parker in February 2012 and February 2013 respectively. This week, the 2009 traded at £1,387 – 23% off its peak – while the 2010 changed hands at £1,290, 18% below peak. Parker described the 2009 as “An amazing wine in every sense” and the 2010 as “an absolutely amazing wine”, adding “Is there anything that proprietor Alfred Tesseron is not doing right?”

The recently released Sassicaia 2012 continued to find the bid following a strong performance towards the end of last week.

Cos d'Estournel, 2005 – a wine that has featured in the Talking Trade tables several times over past few months  – continued to trade well this week ahead of Robert Parker’s retrospective of the Bordeaux vintage due at the end of this month.  As the chart below shows, its price has steadily climbed since the end of last year when a number of wines from the vintage were upgraded. Liv-ex previously reported a ‘ripple effect’ of the upgrades.

With 98 points from Robert Parker at present, perhaps buyers are hoping for a three digit score by the end of June.
