Talking Trade: 24 – 30th April

LXFW50

The market saw a flurry of activity yesterday following the announcement of Robert Parker’s in-bottle scores for Bordeaux 2012, pushing the region’s share of trade by value up to 82.9%. Italy’s share dropped back after activity for Sassicaia 2012 and Brunello Montalcino 2010s – which have recently propped up the region – slowed down. The Liv-ex Fine Wine 50 held steady this week and closed the month up 0.7% on March’s close.

Regional

The top 5 traded wines by value this week all come from Bordeaux. The 2012 vintage dominates the table, while overall the vintage represented 26.9% of Bordeaux’s trade. The 2005s also continued to see high levels of activity, accounting for 15.3% of Bordeaux’s share.

HautBrion

The most traded wine by value this week was Haut Brion 2012 – Parker’s wine of the vintage – which was awarded 98 points in yesterday’s report. In barrel, it had received 93-95 points. As shown in the chart above, the wine saw high levels of secondary market activity and prices soared following the upgrade. It traded on Wednesday at £2,200 per 12×75 and at £2,778 one day later: a 26.3% increase.

The less favourably scored Lafite Rothschild 2012, which received 91 points after being awarded 92-95 in barrel also traded well. However, the majority of this activity took place before Parker’s scores were announced and trade prices dipped slightly today.
