Talking trade: 20th – 26th March

LXFW50

This week the exchange saw a slight dip in activity as the trade begin to make their annual pilgrimage to Bordeaux for En Primeur 2014. Both volume and value were consequently down on what has been a month of strong activity.

Regional

The Bordeaux First Growths’ share of trade by value lifted to 33.5%. Lafite Rothschild was the main contributor to this, boosted by trade for the 98-point 1998, while Mouton Rothschild continued to find the bid with a variety of vintages trading. The Rest of the World trade share was once again buoyed by trade in Henschke’s Hill of Grace 2009, which crept into the top traded wines by value table for the second time this year.

In terms of volume, a variety of wines made the top table. In the run-up to summer, recent Champagne vintages were in demand, including Cristal 2006 for the second week in a row, and Taittinger Comtes 2005. The Super Tuscan 2012 vintage is beginning to trade ahead of release in a few months’ time, and this week Ornellaia saw 1.7% of overall trade by volume.
