Liv-ex 100 December 2015

The Liv-ex Fine Wine 100 index ran flat in December, drifting just 0.03% to close the month on 238.50. Bordeaux First Growth prices fared better, with the Liv-ex Fine Wine 50 rising 0.8% to close the month on 266.83. This leaves the Liv-ex 100 down 7.3% in 2014 and the Liv-ex 50 down 9.0%, although both saw falls in the first half of the year. Since July, the Liv-ex 100 has risen 1.9% and the Liv-ex 50 risen 1.4%.

Top of the December risers was Penfolds Grange 2008, which has 100 points from both the Wine Spectator and Lisa Perrotti-Brown of the Wine Advocate. Meanwhile Robert Parker’s re-scoring of Mouton Rothschild 2005 on 30th December – he upgraded it from 96 to 99+ – had an immediate impact on prices. Having traded at £3,550 on 22nd December, the wine traded at £3,790 on 31st December. In Parker’s view, it has “developed magnificently, and is even better than I remember.”

At the other end of the table, last month’s highest riser Taittinger Comtes 2004 dropped back while high-value Bordeaux 2009 continued to dip. Levels for the broader Liv-ex Fine Wine 1000 and its sub-indices will be released on Monday.
